Holehird Gardens located just off the A592, North of Windermere in the Lake District are owned and run by The Lakeland Horticultural Society. The gardens are located on a hillside overlooking Lake Windermere. They extend to ten acres and include specimen trees and shrubs, extensive rock and heather gardens, alpine houses, a walled garden and herbaceous borders. There are three national collections - astilbe, polystichum ferns and hydrangeas. May wife and I visited in early autumn when the gardens proved, as the photographs below show, that even this late in the season they were beautifully alive with colour. What a peaceful time we had in these immaculately cared-for surroundings. The site includes an imposing Cheshire Home with manicured lawns and a superb cascade. The following photographs are some of my records of an all to brief visit (clicking on the small images will take you to a higher quality version opened in a new window - close the window to return).
